Grammys: A look back

As we tip-toe into the week of the 51st Grammys, we take a look back and forward. Lil’ Wayne’s The Carter III is nominated for Album of The Year. From Be-Bop to Hip-Hop, music has certainly come a long way. It was almost two decades ago when Quincy’s Back On The Block won a Grammy for Album of The Year in 1991. Back On The Block features guest appearances from hip-hop stars such as Ice-T, Big Daddy Kane and Kool Moe Dee. It’s a great big “gumbo”-as Quincy always says- of talent that ranges from Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughn, Dizzy Gillespie, George Benson, Luther Vandross, Ice-T, Tevin Campbell and Ray Charles. You can watch the Back On The Block video below.

We found an article from The New York Times, titled: The Grammys Turn Into The Quincy Jones Show, by Jon Pareles, describing the night Quincy’s Back On The Block as the show stealer:

The 33d annual Grammy Awards belonged to Quincy Jones. His album “Back on the Block,” an ambitious attempt to bring together black musical styles from jazz to soul to funk to rap, was named Album of the Year, and it brought awards to nearly everyone who worked on it, a multi-generational roster of musicians from Ray Charles to the rapper Ice-T.

Mr. Jones was named nonclassical producer of the year and songs from the album won in rap, rhythm-and-blues, jazz fusion and two instrumental arranging categories; “Back on the Block” was also named best-engineered album. With 19 previous awards and 6 under his own name from “Back on the Block,” Mr. Jones became the musician with the second-highest number of Grammys, behind Sir Georg Solti, who won 28.
