Clint on Q in book preview
The release of Quincy’s new book, The Complete Quincy Jones: My Journey & Passions, is just days away. The 148-page tome features more than 400 photos, as well as a preface by Bono, a foreword by Clint Eastwood, an introduction by Maya Angelou, and an afterword by Sidney Poitier.
The Complete Quincy Jones: My Journey & Collection promises an intimate look into the legendary life of Quincy, with revealing interviews and glimpses into his own personal collection of correspondences, notes, and photographs. You can find more information here.
To whet your appetite, here’s an exclusive sneak preview of the book, an excerpt from the Foreward by Quincy’s longtime friend Clint Eastwood:
Back when I was a teenager, I used to go down to Seattle University to hear a big swing band they had. They were pretty darn good for a college band, and this young fellow called Quincy was not only the trumpet player but sort of the charismatic character of the band—a great-looking guy, a chick magnet. Everyone liked Quincy, and he was the kind who just liked everybody. He never seemed to hold any animosity towards people with other ideas or of different nationalities, a very open-borders kind of man, something you can also tell just from listening to his music. For a guy who loves jazz and other forms of really fine music, he’s done stuff in genres that you wouldn’t expect him to do. He’s not afraid to step out and do things that are outside his vernacular, his upbringing.
Having now been a great friend of Quincy’s for many years, I’ve been able to fully appreciate how his qualities as a man and mentor go way beyond the purely musical, also enriching the lives of so many others on a deeply personal level. Quincy loves to pontificate and relate little anecdotal stories about music and life, as you’ll see in the book you’re about to read. But they’re always appealing because they speak to everyone, not just to people who know music from the inside.
If I had to sum up what Quincy Jones has given the world, I would tell people to look at his versatility and at all the things he’s done for others, whether it’s philanthropic or within his profession. He shows us you may have adversity come along in life, but you can overcome and expand beyond it. He typifies that, and he has helped a whole lot of people get off onto a good track. He’ll keep on doing that for a good long while because just when you think he’s going to lay quiet, he comes up with something else and is cruising right along. I guarantee if I call him this afternoon, there’s going to be at least one whole new deal he’s working on. The legacy he’ll leave to the world is genuinely tremendous.
