Q set for Tavis Smiley, L.A. book signing
Quincy continues to promote his new book, The Complete Quincy Jones: My Journey and Passions, with a slate of West Coast appearances on TV, radio and a bookstore this week.
Tonight (December 2), Q will appear on the Tavis Smiley show on PBS. Check for your local airtime here and you can view a five-minute-plus preview on the show here. (There’s a photo of Quincy from the show taping below.)
In the preview clip, Quincy and Smiley page through The Complete Quincy Jones and marvel at the treasures featured within. Among the items that Smiley discusses with Q is a replica of one of Quincy’s music school report cards, notes on his arranging engagements in New York City, a personal note from Oprah Winfrey, and the lyric sheet for “We Are the World,” which was edited in the studio the night of the historic session.
On Thursday (December 4) at 7 p.m., Quincy will appear at the Barnes & Noble Booksellers on the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica for a book signing and question-and-answer session with Don Heckman, who writes about jazz and world music for the Los Angeles Times, Jazz Times and other publications. You can find directions to the bookstore here.
Also, Quincy appeared on KPFK’s Global Village with Maggie LePique last night (December 1), but fear not if you missed it. It’s available as a podcast here.
During the show, LePique raved about The Complete Quincy Jones, calling it an “absolutely stunning and beautiful book” and noting that “everything you love about American popular culture is Quincy Jones.” She also played selections from Quincy’s career, including “The Dude,” Miles Davis’ and Quincy’s “Springsville,” and Frank Sinatra’s, Quincy-arranged “Fly Me to the Moon (in Other Words),” and had Q comment on each recording.
